Delhi Assembly Election 2025 Live: BJP wins after 20 years, AAP loses
The Delhi political landscape has merely seen a dramatic shift as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) staged an incredible comeback in the Delhi Assembly Election 2025, bringing to a closure the decade-old rule in the capital by the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). This historic victory, BJP’s return to power for the first time since 20 years in the capital, has dealt a severe blow to Arvind Kejriwal-led AAP that had dominated the capital’s political scenario since 2015.
BJP Renaissance: The Landslide Victory
At the time of declaration of the election result by the Election Commission of India, celebration erupted in the headquarter of BJP with the workers and leaders welcoming the much-awaited victory. The party has emerged victorious with a majority of XX out of 70 seats it could win, which has improved very significantly from that of 2020 when it could only win 8 seats. Results reveal that, in terms of the change in voter sentiments, there was a strong expression of dissatisfaction with AAP’s government and renewed faith in BJP leadership.
The campaign of the BJP, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, and Delhi BJP Chief, had a lot to do with the development of infrastructure, law and order, and the party’s vision for a “New Delhi.” The saffron party also cashed in on national issues like the development policies, economic growth, and promises of better governance.
What Went Wrong for AAP?
AAP, which was victorious in such thumping majorities in Delhi elections in the years 2015 and 2020 had reverses without any warning signal in 2025. Reason for the falling of the party were some such as:
1. Anti-incumbency, and governance problems
AAP had been ruling Delhi for 10 years and was already facing anti-incumbency. Although the party had initially done so well as it had a vision of education, healthcare, and free utilities, it failed to deliver correctly in its second term, say critics. There was not enough water in the city, pollution was on the rise, and hardly any new jobs.
2. Corruption Charges and Court Cases
Hurt to the AAP’s image, the Delhi liquor policy controversy and accused mismanagement of public funds and accused corruption involving key AAP leaders were serious issues that also hurt the party’s image. The credibility question was raised due to corruption charges against several key leaders who were arrested, which gave people an alternative.
3. Strategic campaign by BJP and strong leadership
Attitude changed because the campaign by BJP was much better prepared with heavyweight leaders. The party could grab the opportunity offered to it by weaknesses in AAP, showcase its achievements, and the first-time voter was contacted. With national leaders, roadshows and rallies helped BJP get footfalls in the national capital.
4. Change in Voter Sentiment
The traditional AAP voting class of the middle class, auto-rickshaw drivers and urban poor somehow lost confidence into the party.
Most of voters were frustrated AAP’s governance looking for BJP bringing development by bringing a change into the guard to change the faces.
Important Contests and Prominent Winners
Several prominent contenders were in this fray, which made the election for Delhi assembly 2025 a keen contest.
New Delhi: It was one of the biggest shocks in the whole election as XYZ from BJP overpowered AAP candidate Arvind Kejriwal.
Chandni Chowk: Again, AAP here suffered a drubbing; BJP’s ABC was leading this seat by wide margins.
Okhla: This Muslim majority seat has so far held by AAP in the past years, but shocking to all as this time witnessed a shift for XYZ from BJP gaining ground on this seat.
The Congress party, which once ruled Delhi for 15 consecutive years, failed to make a significant impact yet again. Despite a few gains compared to its disastrous performance in 2020, the party remained a distant third, struggling to reclaim its lost voter base. Analysts believe that the Congress failed to offer a strong alternative or capitalize on AAP’s decline.
What This Means for Delhi’s Future
High expectations are seen to be raised as now, with all their power BJP sits at the top. Promise of major thrust on infrastructural development, law and order, economic reforms and improvement in governance left many waiting for more to be wrought in the National Capital by this ambitious party of theirs.
It’s time for AAP to regain its lost image and bring people back on its side. Whether Arvind Kejriwal will be the party face or will relinquish his role to some fresher is a question yet to be answered by the near future for AAP.
The Delhi Assembly Election 2025 has undoubtedly rewritten the capital’s political landscape. The return of the BJP after two decades promises a new chapter in the governance of Delhi, and AAP is tasked with the challenging task of introspection and revival. With the new government in place, the city will watch and wait to see whether Delhi experiences the change it wanted.
