Issuing a remark that has stirred the political cauldron in Punjab, veteran politician and former BJP Member of Parliament (MP) [Insert Name] announced that the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government headed by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann is on the verge of collapse. The comments have contributed to the political dithering of the state, with the opposition wading towards a fray that most of them see as a warm-up to a battle for dominance. AAP national convenor and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal responded to the accusations, terming them “baseless and desperate attempts” to remove a democratically elected government.
The Explosive Allegation
The row had started when the former BJP MP made sweeping statements at a press conference this week. “AAP Punjab government can collapse at any time,” he asserted. “There is discontent in their party and several MLAs are dissatisfied with Bhagwant Mann as a leader. It is only a matter of time when the government collapses of its own weight.”

While he did not give concrete evidence to make his charges, he spoke of internal divisions, accusations of corruption, and disaffection of citizens as a whole and AAP members specifically.
He also attributed the AAP leadership for powers centralization, marginalization of local leaders, and failure in handling key state issues like law and order, employment, and narcotics control. “People have voted for change, but what they have got is chaos,” he also vowed.
Kejriwal’s Scathing Response
Arvind Kejriwal was not the kind to hold his tongue and lashed back at the comments, terming them as “politically motivated” and “BJP’s reflection of insecurity.” Addressing the media, Kejriwal stated, “Whenever the BJP finds a strong regional government functioning in the interest of the people, they begin spreading lies in order to generate instability. Punjab has witnessed massive development in more than a year now, and that scares them.”
He outlined the performance of the Mann government and defended it by enlisting a chain of policy accomplishments like free electricity to consumers, development of government schools and hospitals, and against corrupt bureaucrats. “Bhagwant Mann has tightened honest government in Punjab. Whatever level of rumors they generate, people are with us,” Kejriwal asserted.
Political Weather in Punjab
The AAP Punjab state government was sworn in March 2022 in a record majority, winning 92 of the 117 assembly seats. The party’s comprehensive win granted it its first complete state government beyond Delhi and presented hope for a new dawn in the governance system. But the journey ever since has not been an easy ride.
The Mann government has come under fire on multiple fronts — from law and order (the biggest murder cases such as the killing of singer Sidhu Moosewala), from the lack of economic pick-up, and for inexperience and overreliance on orders from Delhi.

Even with the tragedy, AAP still has a comfortable majority in the assembly, and thus an imminent collapse of the government short of some sort of apocalypse-scale internal uprising or co-ordinated political coup — something this ex-BJP MP seems to be hinting at — is not in the cards.
AAP’s Internal Dynamics
Such defections or open rebellions have not been witnessed within the AAP cadre in Punjab, but political analysts have also referenced cryptic indications of tensions. There are rumors that some of the MLAs have been discontented due to a feeling of strangulation and lack of proper voice in decision-making. The notion that the center’s decisions are being dictated from Delhi — a charge the party has always been guilty of — still persists.
But AAP leaders dismissed such reports as unfounded, stating that opposition was making false allegations to instill fear and panic among the people.
One of the senior AAP leaders in Punjab, who wished to remain anonymous, stated, “Yes, there are meetings and differences at times, but that is a natural course of events in any democratic system. There is no threat to the government.”
BJP’s Strategy in Punjab
The BJP, never able to consolidate itself in Punjab even once before, has been attempting to widen its base, especially after it severed ties with its long-time friend Shiromani Akali Dal. The party believes that it can ride on AAP’s governance failure and people’s agitation.
By leveling charges of instability and threatening an imminent collapse, BJP could be testing realignments down the line or trying to poach disappointed AAP MLAs.
Political analysts hold on to the view that these charges are a larger design to unsettle AAP’s stronghold over north India, particularly with Lok Sabha elections 2024 already over their head and state elections elsewhere up next.
Public Reaction and Ground Sentiment
Public opinion has been divided. While most AAP supporters believe Bhagwant Mann will do better, others worry about governance and law and order.
Citizens of Amritsar and Ludhiana complained of growing crime and unemployment but liked the AAP effort in healthcare and education.
One man said, “No government is perfect, but AAP has introduced some change badly needed. These collapse rumors are political stunts.”
Conclusion: Fact or Political Theatrics?
The threat that the AAP government in Punjab can collapse “any time now” is grave — but now seems more political drama than actual danger. With a robust legislative majority, no reported rebellion within, and support for some of its reforms by public opinion, the Mann government does not appear to be on the verge of being overthrown.
But politics is generally unpredictable. The comments of the former BJP MP could be the first shot in a game with far-reaching implications — to cause things to get knotty, to arouse internal turmoil, and to set the stage for possible defectors or coalitions.
What is yet to be known is if AAP can still govern, stay whole in the bargain, and vow the people that it can keep its end of the deal — without giving way to either external pressure or internal sabotage.
