Astrology has always been employed as a means of self-knowledge, allowing us to know our strengths and weaknesses, as well as our habits. But what if the stars also suggest our psychological weaknesses? Although zodiac signs do not induce personality disorders, they have some characteristics related to certain psychological tendencies.
Before diving in, it’s important to note that personality disorders are complex mental health conditions diagnosed by professionals. This article is for entertainment and self-awareness, not medical advice. With that said, let’s explore the personality disorder most linked to each zodiac sign.
♈ Aries (March 21 – April 19) – Antisocial Personality Disorder (ASPD)
Aries is governed by Mars, the planet of war, aggression, and spontaneity. Aries individuals are born adventurers who thrive on excitement. Their spontaneity and rule-breaking can also be characteristic of Antisocial Personality Disorder (ASPD) behaviors, including a lack of respect for authority and propensity to act in unsafe ways. While Aries individuals are typically only adventurous and competitive, an extreme lack of empathy and lack of concern for consequences may be indicative of ASPD characteristics.
♉ Taurus (April 20 – May 20) – Obsessive-Compulsive Personality Disorder (OCPD)
Taurus is governed by Venus, and thus they are admirers of beauty, stability, and routine. Their all-pervasive compulsion to control and perfectionism, however, is more suggestive of Obsessive-Compulsive Personality Disorder (OCPD) than OCD. OCPD, unlike OCD, which is concerned with unwanted compulsions, is marked by rigidity, excessive attention to detail, and resistance to change. Taureans perform well in organized settings but can be challenged by flexibility in extreme situations.
♊ Gemini (May 21 – June 20) – Histrionic Personality Disorder (HPD)
Geminis are social butterflies and are governed by Mercury, the communication planet. They enjoy being the center of attention and can be over-the-top sometimes, so a connection to Histrionic Personality Disorder (HPD) comes naturally. HPD is excessive emotionalism, attention-seeking, and pervasive need for approval. Most Geminis like to be the center of the party, but individuals with extreme personality traits will have difficulty with an overwhelming need for approval.
♋ Cancer (June 21 – July 22) – Dependent Personality Disorder (DPD)
Cancers are very emotional, empathetic, and care more about others’ needs than themselves. Their love for their loved ones at times turns into Dependent Personality Disorder (DPD). It’s a state when there is too much dependence upon others for protection, inability to decide without input from other people, and dreading being rejected. While most Cancers are just concerned and committed, full dependence on other people for psychological nourishment might be an indication of deeper troubles.
♌ Leo (July 23 – August 22) – Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD)
Leos are charming, confident, and enjoy being in the limelight. Such innate charm is usually a good thing, but in extreme situations, it is almost akin to Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD). NPD is characterized as an exaggerated sense of self-worth, a need for continuous attention, and no concern for others. Leos usually just love being loved, but an excessive interest in their own magnificence can be a sign of narcissism.
♍ Virgo (August 23 – September 22) – Avoidant Personality Disorder (AvPD)
Perfectionists that Virgos are, they criticize themselves and hold themselves to high standards. Their fear of failure and fear of judgment complement each other along with Avoidant Personality Disorder (AvPD). AvPD comprises abnormal sensitivity to criticism, avoidance of social relationships, and acute insecurities. Most Virgos are just sticklers about detail, but a few may grapple with excessive fear of failure and social ostracism.
♎ Libra (September 23 – October 22) – Dependent Personality Disorder (DPD)
Libras like love and harmony but generally at the expense of their own autonomy. Their extreme fear of being alone and perpetual need for reassurance can manifest Dependent Personality Disorder (DPD). To an extreme degree, they might shy away from conflict and struggle to make decisions without reassurance from others, becoming overly reliant on relationships.
♏ Scorpio (October 23 – November 21) – Paranoid Personality Disorder (PPD)
Scorpios are inherently secretive and highly suspicious of others, and this is consistent with Paranoid Personality Disorder (PPD). PPD has symptoms that involve chronic suspicion, believing that others are conspiring against them, and an inability to trust their closest friends. Most Scorpios are simply cautious and reserved, but excessive paranoia could be an indication of more serious psychological issues.
♐ Sagittarius (November 22 – December 21) – Antisocial Personality Disorder (ASPD)
Sagittarians are particularly famous for their rebelliousness, risk-taking, and independence. These qualities, though thrilling, sometimes border on Antisocial Personality Disorder (ASPD) behavior like disrespect for authority and irresponsibility. The majority of Sagittarians are attracted to being impulsive and adventurous, but an utter disregard for consequences may betray more severe inclinations.
♑ Capricorn (December 22 – January 19) – Obsessive-Compulsive Personality Disorder (OCPD)
Capricorns are diligent, industrious, and ambitious. Their rigid requirement of order and perfectionism can be equated to Obsessive-Compulsive Personality Disorder (OCPD). In contrast to OCD, OCPD is an overconcern with rules, control, and efficiency at the cost of flexibility and interpersonal relationships. While most Capricorns are merely ambitious, excessive perfectionism can interfere with their well-being.
♒ Aquarius (Jan. 20 – Feb. 18) – Schizotypal Personality Disorder (StPD)
Aquarians are eccentric, quirky, and profound thinkers. Their own perspective occasionally lends itself to projecting Schizotypal Personality Disorder (StPD) with its strange beliefs, social withdrawal, and suspicion. Aquarians are generally only inventive and independent, but the more extreme ones will have trouble detaching from reality or with magical thinking.
♓ Pisces (Feb. 19 – Mar. 20) – Borderline Personality Disorder
Pisces are extremely emotional, sensitive, and mood-swung, all of which are a draw for Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD). BPD is defined by mood swings, fear of abandonment, and impulsivity. While some Pisceans are merely artistic and empathetic, extreme mood swings and issues with emotional regulation may suggest deeper issues.
